The main factors that must be taken into consideration when choosing the right type of floor for the kitchen are its strength and practicality. “Kitchen floors need to be practical for day-to-day maintenance,” says architect Flávia Medina .

The kitchen is an environment in the home that is in constant contact with grease, smoke, water, and food debris, so the lining of the room must be durable and easy to clean. Every decorative detail in the kitchen needs to be practical and functional, as these are necessary characteristics and almost intrinsic to the environment.

On the other hand, according to the architect Inah Mantovani , the entire project must be thought of when choosing the best floor for the kitchen. “It is necessary to think about the predominant colors, the desired style for the kitchen and the details present in the room”, says the professional.

There are different types of materials, in addition to different colors, designs and models of kitchen flooring on the market. To help in your choice, check out tips and inspiration on the subject.

A room gains personality thanks to the details that are carefully thought out to compose the environment and the floor is an essential detail. Attention is needed to choose the floor of a room like the kitchen, which needs functionality, so architects Inah Mantovani and Flávia Medina helped to point out important tips for choosing the right floor for the kitchen.

1. Escape from white

https://www.tuacasa.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/pisos-para-cozinha-20-730x817.jpg

“Where did the idea that the kitchen floor should be white came from?”, asks Flávia Medina. Today, there are floors in different colors and patterns that look good in kitchens.

“The tone of the floor must seek a composition with the rest of the decoration, whether standing out through colorful motifs or creating a neutral base so that other details stand out”, completes the professional.

2. Beware of slippery floors

https://www.tuacasa.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/pisos-para-cozinha-11-730x487.jpg

It is very important to choose a kitchen floor that is not too slippery because we always use water, oil and fatty foods in this environment. According to Flávia Medina, we should avoid choosing floors with a polished finish.

Inah Mantovani also says that a good option is non-slip floors. “But it is always important to be careful, as some are very porous and can easily stain”, warns the architect.

3. Light floor x dark floor

https://www.tuacasa.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/pisos-para-cozinha-64-730x408.jpg

PHOTO: REPRODUCTION / EDUARDA CORRÊA

“An environment with darker floors becomes more elegant, sober and sometimes even modern. While an environment with floors in light tones gives us an idea of cleanliness, organization, balance”, says Medina.

The choice depends on other finishes and defined details, on the feeling that the resident wants to convey and also on the size of the space, as dark floors can create the impression of a smaller environment, while light floors can enlarge the room.

4. Choose durable, easy-to-clean floors

https://www.tuacasa.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/pisos-para-cozinha-5-730x486.jpg

PHOTO: REPRODUCTION / ELIANE REVESTIMENTOS

The kitchen is an easily dirty environment that handles the daily use of food and products. For this reason, the kitchen floor needs to be resistant to contact with water and grease. Furthermore, it also needs to be practical for cleaning.

5. Set the decoration style

https://www.tuacasa.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/pisos-para-cozinha-58-730x484.jpg

PHOTO: REPRODUCTION / IBD ARCHITECTURE

The choice of both the material and the color of the floor depends on the style defined for the room. By having a decor in mind, it is possible to think about which type of flooring fits best with the other details.

Porcelain floors can represent elegance, wooden floors bring a rustic feel, and tiled floors and tiles enhance vintage and retro looks, for example.

6. Consider space needs

https://www.tuacasa.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/pisos-para-cozinha-55-730x488.jpg

PHOTO: REPRODUCTION / D2N ARCHITECTURE

You need to think about your kitchen space as a whole and what your needs are. Light floors, as already mentioned, can amplify small spaces. Printed floors can bring life to a simple environment or can be exaggerated when the space already has many different decoration details, for example.

If you are building, think about the space available for this room and how you plan to decorate it. If it’s just changing your kitchen floor, choose a floor that blends in with the space you already have.

8 types of floors to use in the kitchen

There are many different types of flooring on the market, but not all of them are ideal for the kitchen. Some materials are more suitable than others for this environment due to their resistance and durability, such as the materials below that are present in the lists of the most used by architects and interior designers for kitchens.

porcelain

https://www.tuacasa.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/pisos-para-cozinha-49-730x486.jpg

PHOTO: REPRODUCTION / ÉRICA SALGUERO

The porcelain is one of the most used types of flooring to coat not only the kitchen, but several rooms of the house. Flávia Medina points to porcelain as one of her favorite coverings, “I really like the practicality and versatility of the porcelain floor. It is a product of high resistance and low absorption and nowadays there is an impressive variety of prints and textures”.

These floors are durable and easy-to-clean options using water, mild detergent and a damp cloth. Inah Mantovani warns about the necessary care with the maintenance of the floor, “these floors can easily stain, depending on the model”, she says.

Ceramics

https://www.tuacasa.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/pisos-para-cozinha-7-730x522.jpg

PHOTO: REPRODUCTION / ELIANE REVESTIMENTOS

Medina and Mantovani explain that ceramic floors are much less resistant than porcelain and need maintenance from time to time.

However, this coating has two positive points. The first one is price, ceramics have a more affordable cost than porcelain, for example. The second is the variety of colors, textures and floor models found in ceramics.

Marble and granite

https://www.tuacasa.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/pisos-para-cozinha-60-730x485.jpg

PHOTO: REPRODUCTION / PAULINHO PERES

Marble and granite floors “are practical, easy to clean and mask dirt,” according to Mantovani. They are extracted from natural rocks and this limits the options for textures, colors and prints on this floor.

Granite is more resistant to infiltration than marble, and therefore more recommended as well. However, both are modern and functional options.

Burnt cement

https://www.tuacasa.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/pisos-para-cozinha-62-730x438.jpg

PHOTO: REPRODUCTION / MOVDECOR PLANNED

These floors are basically made with water, sand and cement and for this reason they are cheaper than other materials. They contribute to a rustic and modern environment.

On the other hand, Medina and Mantovani come to a consensus in pointing out the need for attention and care in cleaning this floor. According to Medina, ” burnt cement can have cracks and can get greasy easily.”

epoxy floor

https://www.tuacasa.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/pisos-para-cozinha-63-730x608.jpg

PHOTO: REPRODUCTION / INDUSTRIAL SOLUTIONS

The epoxy floor is very easy to clean as well as being hygienic and durable. When well maintained, it has a high durability. The disadvantages of this type of coating are the high cost of the floor and the lack of available companies to apply it in small environments.

tablets

The inserts are a very resistant type of coating, being manufactured in different types of materials. Ceramics, glass and porcelain are the most suitable materials for coating kitchens with tiles.

They can all be applied in the same color or a combination of colors can be made, giving a relaxed and cheerful air to the environment.

Hydraulic tile

https://www.tuacasa.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/pisos-para-cozinha-10-730x913.jpg

PHOTO: REPRODUCTION / PORTOBELLO

The hydraulic tile is a vintage and retro option, due to the designs, colors and textures present in the pieces. It is handcrafted and can therefore be specially customized for the project according to the client’s tastes and needs.

These floors can take time to complete and can be priced higher than other flooring options, as they are handcrafted.

vinyl flooring

https://www.tuacasa.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/pisos-para-cozinha-27-730x730.jpg

Many projects have used vinyl flooring to cover kitchens, but the professionals interviewed for this article do not usually indicate this option. The vinyl flooring is easy to use and also easy to clean adhesive, however may not be in constant contact with the water to be little tough.

A point in favor of this type of floor is the wide variety of prints that can be found in adhesive form.

https://www.tuacasa.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/pisos-para-cozinha-44-730x540.jpg

Wood is not a very suitable material for covering kitchen floors because it does not have good resistance to water and humidity. However, some architects end up daring in the decoration and try to choose wooden floors with greater resistance or porcelain tiles that imitate wood.

28. Wood is a risky but beautiful choice

https://www.tuacasa.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/pisos-para-cozinha-45-730x484.jpg

PHOTO: REPRODUCTION / PATRICIA MARTINEZ

Despite being risky, wood makes up beautiful environments. The solution for this room was to cover only the part of the kitchen dedicated to the dining room with wood, while the floor of the area with sink, refrigerator and stove was covered with a more resistant material.

29. This material can create classic environments

https://www.tuacasa.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/pisos-para-cozinha-46-730x486.jpg

The versatility of wood is its biggest attraction. It looks good in different rooms and helps with composition in environments with varied styles. In this environment, wood was responsible for creating a light, classic and elegant environment.

In this kitchen, wood created an important point of contrast by being inserted in a simple environment with a modern decoration. Wood appears in the form of clubs, that is, small pieces divided, coupled and glued, which are usually more resistant and durable.

31. Or even being part of modern spaces

https://www.tuacasa.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/pisos-para-cozinha-51-730x486.jpg

It is necessary to put aside the preconceived idea that the kitchen floor must always be neutral. It is possible to create a unique environment, with personality and very beautiful, using colored and patterned floors, as in the environment above.

35. Black and white can appear on the floor

https://www.tuacasa.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/pisos-para-cozinha-53-730x494.jpg

Ceramic flooring has good durability and a wide range of models, in addition to being easy to maintain and for these reasons it is a good choice of floor covering for the kitchen. In the space above, this floor helps to maintain the lightness and originality of the room.

Another preconceived idea that needs to be put aside is that kitchens always ask for light floors. Dark floors can also create elegant, harmonious and light environments. In this kitchen, the floor gained an interesting highlight when contrasting with the light tones of the walls and cabinets.

38. Bet on the elegance of granite
